Description

Recently I visited my girlfriend while she's been staying with her parents up in West Virginia. I was out there for a couple weeks, and did a little bit of herping while I was there. Mostly just caught a lot of salamanders, however most of my salamander pics I felt were surprisenly complete duds. The only good pics I got were of this frog. I was talking to Amanda's mom one night on the front porch and this guy just came hoppin' between us. While identifying it, I read something interesting about this frog. It's called the Gray Treefrog, but I noticed it had two species names, Hyla versicolor and Hyla chrysoscelis. It turns out, there are two different species of the Gray Treefrog that occupy the same range, but they look nearly exactly alike. Only way to tell them apart in the field is by their calls. Dad, who is a Herpetologist at SDSU, also says the other only way to tell them apart is by their chromosomes, which I obviously can't do, lol. So which one this is, I'll never know, but I still thought it was pretty interesting.
