So here's the famous Gila Monster (Heloderma suspectum) we got on our Kofa Mountain trip. This lizard, and one other, are the only venomous lizards in the world. The bite is supposed to be really painful, and in a few cases fatal. Looks like a slow and sluggish lizard, but believe me, they can turn around and strike you pretty fast from just about any position. In my opinion, I think the colors make it one of the most beautiful and striking animals in the Sonoran Desert (and in some rare cases the Mojave).
